Roughly 6500 languages are spoken around the world and there are nearly 9000 computer code languages. It can be difficult for someone to come to Prince Edward Island and not only adjust to learning English, but also a series of different computer codes. This was the case for Marianna Hollanda.

Marianna is 21, from Brazil. She is taking Computer Information Systems, (CIS). Marianna has always enjoyed video games, she was curious about how games operated behind the scenes. Her first language is Portuguese. One of the biggest difficulties for her has been trying to perfect her English while also learning a whole new language for coding.
Computer Information Systems is a two-year program located on The Prince of Wales campus. You can learn many different things from designing your own social media app, to learning how to program your own internet browser.
"It is really hands on."
Some of her classmates already have experience in the programming field. "Everything is really new, I came without having any knowledge around programming." Marianna addressed the difficulties she has had.
Sometimes, she has taken to forms of online learning to help get translations from Portuguese teachers and friends. Learning English with a whole new language is really hard on the brain. It is normal for anyone studying here from abroad to have these struggles. There are resources available to students not just on campus, but online as well to ensure that students do not fall behind. Studying here at Holland College should be as comfortable as you can make it.
Marianna is excited for next semester. She and her classmates will get to do a few projects, one in which the students will create their very own media app. Her group has already started brainstorming ideas.
Marianna has been enjoying the year even with the challenges this year has brought to her. She is excited to graduate with her classmates and is ready to wrap up the current semester.
